Why Kiospal exists
A short letter about Tier-2 and Tier-3 ecosystems, first-generation builders, and why I keep showing up for the community I came from.
I grew up in a small town in Tamil Nadu, in a family where I was the first to study engineering.
I did not know what a startup was until I was nineteen. I did not know what open source meant until someone in a workshop, generously, drew me a picture. I have a vivid memory of someone on a Discord call patiently explaining how git rebase worked, while I pretended I already knew, because admitting I didn't felt like admitting I didn't belong.
I belonged. I just hadn't been told the rules yet.
The thing nobody tells you
Most of the cost of being a first-generation builder is not technical. The technical part you can grind. The harder part is the defaults — the implicit knowledge that other people seem to have absorbed by osmosis, and that you have to construct from scratch in real time, on stage, in front of people who already know.
Where do you find your first internship?
Which conferences are worth going to?
What does a fair freelance rate look like?
How do you ask for help without sounding small?
None of those answers are in the syllabus. All of them are in someone's WhatsApp DMs, somewhere.
Kiospal is, in the simplest possible terms, an attempt to put more of those answers in public.
What we actually do
We run small things, on purpose.
- Bootcamps with college students who do not have a tech park within an hour of their hostel.
- Hands-on sessions with SMEs who want to understand IoT without buying a SaaS that costs more than their factory.
- Letters — long, slow, written ones — when someone in the community is stuck and needs more than a Slack message.
- Real problems — usually our own — discussed in public, with all the awkward, half-finished thinking left in.
We are not a large community. We do not want to be. We want to be the kind of place where, three years from now, someone who once felt out of place in a Discord call is the one explaining git rebase to a younger version of themselves.
